What You Need to Read This Week

This really applies to any position you are hiring for. Make sure to be kind to new people meeting your company for the first time.

An inside look into what buyers are looking for.

strftime.org
by Unknown

Using Python’s date functions and can’t remember if uppercase AM/PM is %A or %p? Sure you could go look it up in the documents and scroll down the page until you find what you want. Or, you could go to strftime.org and get all the info you need on one, gorgeous, simple page.

Pinterest’s Sign-Up Process
By Nicholas Carlson

I hate how Business Insider sensationalizes titles but this is a good look at a great sign-up flow. I love how Pinterest keeps their entire process very personal.

A 7,000 word essay on the idiosyncrasies of salary negotiation. The key point here is to stop feeling guilty about asking for market compensation.

The JS kids these days. What can’t they build in that language we all originally learned about as a way to make dialog boxes follow your mouse around the page? Well, some folks at LinkedIn figured out how to make a full-fledged VNC client in pure Javascript!

The tale of 7 failed products. The reoccurring themes: they didn’t build something people would actually pay for, didn’t learn from their users, and got straight-up beat down by the competition.

[Audio Only] Interview with Mark Zuckerberg

An interview with Mark Zuckerberg when Facebook had 5 million users, was only for college students, and they had just launched their photos application. It’s pretty amazing to hear Mark sound like many early-stage founders I meet now.

What You Need to Read This Week

Here is a basic rundown of what SOPA is, where it is now, and why its important for the startup community to know about.

When companies start they need to make one very important decision at the beginning of their life: do you want to build organically or get big fast?

If you have 1,000 servers each individually rated at 99.9% uptime, on average, one of those machines is always failing.

Alison shares some lessons she learned from working at Box.net and now starting her own company.

Co-founder and hiring problems, especially with the first 5 hires, trouble shipping, and trouble communication are all deep problematic signs for new startups.

CanCan is a great authentication system for for Rails, but how do you rigorously test it’s magic?

People love to talk about working on meaningful things but Elon Musk, who started Tesla Motors and SpaceX, is one individual who lives and breaths making a huge difference.

A rare video filmed at the Computer History Museum in 1980 of Steve Jobs talking about the beginning of Apple and his plans for the future.

Hello everyone!I am in Shanghai this week for the Game Developers Conference as the moderator for the Independent games summit. There are some great speakers here that really define the Indy spirit. One thing that I learned is that Independent Game Developers are the spiritual brothers of New Media web entreprenuers. They are following a vision and passion of building unique
and innovative games that they just can’t do at bigger studios and corporate game complexes. They work in teams of 5 or less people, they live in near poverty both before and sometimes after their game ships and they need to convince others to give up great jobs and prospects to join an uncertain future making off beat games.I will be in Shanghai this week as a mentor for the upcoming Startup Weekend Shanghai this weekend.
Not to be outdone, there is an iWeekend happening in Beijing as well to help celebrate the Global Entrepreneurship week. Join us to: kick start, refine your products and boost your business, work side-by-side with fellow entrepreneurs and professionals, and get advice & insight from top notch mentors!Have a great Global Entrepreneuship Week everyone!

Regards,
Frank and David

————————————————————————————————————–

Welcome back to StartupDigest Product Manager, the members-only guide to becoming a better product manager every week. Whether you’re a Product Manager at an early stage startup or at a large corporation, you’ll find yourself spending a lot of time solving problems. The nature of each problem differs. Sometimes they present themselves obviously: an engineer on your team suddenly takes a personal leave and you’re on a deadline to deliver your first demo. In this case, there’s a clear path toward resolving the problem and getting the project back on track. The harder problems are less noticeable and slowly brew behind the scenes. How do you deal with degrading team morale or declining code quality? As a PM how do you prepare your team to anticipate, identify and solve these problems? This week’s digest article delves further into this topic.

StartupDigest Product Manager is curated by:
Herman Ng – Program Manager, Microsoft

Resource of the Week

In The Ring: Problems, Problems Everywhere
By Seth Sternberg, TechCrunch

Meebo CEO Seth Sternberg shares his thoughts on problem solving from a startup CEO’s perspective. Seth sums up his thoughts well: “don’t run from your problems, but do everything you can to empower your people to solve them early and often.”

Since PMs are essentially mini-CEOs, the insights shared in this article are relevant for this digest too.

Welcome back to StartupDigest Product Manager, the members-only guide to becoming a better product manager every week.

Stories about Steve Jobs’ passing dominated news media coverage last week. I think what we’ll miss most about him would be the lessons learned and product inspirations enabled by his presence. We’ll no longer be able to interview him or invite him to speak at university commencements. What we can do, however, is ask people what they’ve learned through working and interacting with him in the past. I’d like to share one such article in this week’s digest.
