——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Hello startups! I’m finally back in Madrid after a very busy week! I was in Pamplona giving a Scrum course and then the weekend in Porto for the Startup Pirates Battle, an amazing team pushing for a greater startup community in Portugal. It’s been a very interesting experience because sometimes we talk about the startup community across Europe but we forget that each country, each city within a country has its own challenges. For example, I learned that Portugal has a lot of talent (I already knew that but it was good to experience it again) but very few startups. Most students have no desire to do a startup and the few tech companies that are there have a hard issue finding funding. Especially shocking is the lack of private funding. Mostly all money comes from either the government or European funds.Thankfully, this is changing and there are a bunch of guys pushing for change. On one side you have the Pirates, with members pushing TEDx events or Sandbox Network events across the country. On the other side, you see guys like Diamantino Costa, Chairman at Critical Software and general partner at Critical Ventures, one of the most successful tech companies in Portugal that is trying to fund tech projects not only in Portugal but across Europe.

Anyways, going back to Spain and Madrid in particular, we have one hell of a week! FICOD is here and we’ll have some amazing speakers coming in, including Tim O’Reilly, Gary Vaynerchuck or our beloved co-founder Chris McCann. :D So definitely check it out! Here we go!

Madrid StartupDigest is curated by:
Alex Barrera – Founder of Press42 (@42press)

What’s Going on in the Madrid Startup Community

FICOD (Spanish/English)
When: Tues Nov 22, 9:00am – Thur Nov 24
Where: Palacio de Congresos, Madrid

Definitely the must-go event of the week. Literally everybody will attend, ranging from investors to all of the most rperesentative entrepreneurs from Spain and several cool US friends (Tim O’Reilly, Gary Vaynerchuck, Chris McCann, etc.).

Inspirational 2011 (Spanish/English)
When: Wed Nov 23, 8:30am
Where: Palacio Duques de Pastrana, Madrid

The only event dedicated entirely to advertising and digital communication in Spain, there are some interesting talks here too. They’re a little unlike because they fight against FICOD for the timeslot but some impressive speakers here.

Founder Meet (FICOD) (Spanish)
When: Thur Nov 24, 11:00am – 1:00pm
Where: Palacio de Congresos,Madrid

While inside FICOD, I wanted to mark this event because I think it’s badly needed. Founder Meet is a speed dating event between founders so that you can find a co-founder or partner to help you with your project. It’s a very neat idea that I’m sure is going to be helpful to plenty of people.

iWeekend Universidad Madrid (Spanish)
When: Fri Nov 25, 12:00am
Where: Edificio Telefónica, Calle Gran Vía 28, Madrid

iWeekend comes back this next weekend! With a target of capturing the imagination of our students, I’m sure they’ll make a splash and uncover some entrepreneurs within the students.

This would be a great opportunity for general discussion, networking, partnerships, troubleshooting and meeting some like-minded people. I know Tuesday lunch may initially sound like a weird time and day, but hoping that most of us might work in the CBD, having it Tuesday lunch will hopefully not clash with our other appointments and commitments. I’m happy for another suggested time if this doesn’t suit the majority. Venue should be the same as last time. ——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Hi ho! How is everyone today? Hope you guys had a great weekend! I had one hell of a crazy week myself (in the stressful sense of it :P). I have to say, one of the highlights of the week was TEDxMadrid though. I was very impressed with the show they displayed. Everything went down perfect. Great talks and a great environment. For those that couldn’t attend, I’ll leave you with one of the videos that was shown during the TEDx here. It’s a mind blowing video and I’m sure will cheer your week. :)Investor Day from Startup Bootcamp Madrid was a great event with nine startups rocking on stage (Disclosure: I was one of the mentors to introduce one of the teams on stage so I might be biased :P). But I just wanted to say, hey, it’s Spain and we’re kicking it with International Investor days. Much to learn and much to do yet, but the startup scene seems busier than ever. Keep pushing guys!Off to our weekly events. This week is crazy with them.

CM Live: Tourism in Social Media (Spanish)
When: Tues Sept 27, 6:30pm
Where: CIBBVA, Plaza Santa Bárbara 2, Madrid (Metro Alonso Martinez)

Nightowls Madrid (Depends on audience)
When: Tues Sept 27, 10:00pm
Where: CIBALL, c/ Corredera Baja de San Pablo, 41 Madrid

The first Night Owls Madrid is here! I must say I’m very intrigued by this event. It’s bascially, we meet at 10pm and we’ll work until 4am on our stuff. Seems to me a nice hacker meetup, like in the old times. ;)

Social Networks for Corporations (Spanish)
When: Wed Sept 28, 10:00am
Where: Hotel Auditórium de Madrid, Avenida de Aragón, 400, Madrid

Definitely an interesting event if you’re a startup trying to sell SaaS or Sharing/Collaborating services to corporations. Probably a good place to network with future customers.

Iniciador workshop: Beyond Powerpoint (Spanish)
When: Wed Sept 28, 5:00pm
Where: utopic_us, C/ Concepción Jerónima, 22. Madrid

A very interesting workshop that I’m sure many people should definitely take. :P Many times, a good presentation is the difference between raising money or not.

Hackton GWT & AppEngine (Spanish)

Where: CIBBVA – Plaza de Santa Bárbara, 2, Madrid (Metro Alonso Martinez)

What’s Going on in the Nürnberg Startup Community

Drupal Group Franken Meetup (Free)
When: 13.09.2011, Time not finally anounced as of yet, please look at their website!
Where: New Elements GmbH, Thurn-und-Taxis-Straße 10, 90411 Nürnberg (Alcatel-Lucent Gebäude im Nordostpark)

The name pretty much gives it away. It’s for all of you that manage content with Drupal. Since the software is pretty popular in the region, this should be interesting for some of you!

SEO Stammtisch Franken (Free)
When: 15.09.2011, 19:00 – 23:00 Uhr
Where: Bäckerhof, Schlehengasse 2, 90402 Nürnberg

Another “Franken” event. And again, the title pretty much gives it away. Do you work in SEO or want to learn about it form professionals? Then this is your chance to sneak in and get that extremely valuable information. And the best part: It’s free! Plus, you can develop personal relationships and get to meet people in the space.

Advance Conference (150-350€)
When: 19. – 20.09.2011
Where: Trinitatiskirche, Filzengraben 4, 50676 Köln

I seldomly include paid events, and it’s even rarer that I include events that are not in the area, but this one might actually be interesting for a few of you, plus, I’ll most likely be there. Twelve startups will be selected to pitch their business in front of a high-class jury including renowned VCs and business angels (blackbox, Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments, T-Venture, DuMont Venture, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Wellington Partners, iStep App Ventures, Earlybird Venture Capital, NRW.BANK, Hanse Ventures, etc.).

The top 3 will be able to present in front of the conference audience. And then, of course there’s the “Special Prize”: Silicon Valley’s seed accelerator blackbox invites one startup from the exclusive ADVANCE pitching sessions to their famous mansion near Palo Alto/Stanford for one week. 29/08/2011

Below is an archived version of the Cape Town StartupDigest Events List – a weekly curated listing of the best tech startup events in Cape Town. If you would like to get next week’s digest on Monday, sign up here.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The big event of this week is the Potter Talks, which are similar to TED. Unfortunately, most of the tickets to this event (which are free) were snapped up within 24 hours. But put your name on the waiting list in case some people can’t make it, as the line-up looks fantastic. There’s actually a lot happening in Cape Town, as I discovered after I started receiving all of your suggestions – it’s my job to find all the interesting events and let you know about them. Thanks to all the suggestions that I was sent over the last week, there is now a LOT of events for all of us to attend – the more info you send me, the more I can share with everyone.See you at some events this week.-Eric
