Madrid StartupDigest – November 21, 2011

21/11/2011

Below is an archived version of the Madrid StartupDigest Events List – a weekly curated listing of the best tech startup events in Madrid. If you would like to get next week’s digest on Monday, sign up here.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Hello startups! I’m finally back in Madrid after a very busy week! I was in Pamplona giving a Scrum course and then the weekend in Porto for the Startup Pirates Battle, an amazing team pushing for a greater startup community in Portugal. It’s been a very interesting experience because sometimes we talk about the startup community across Europe but we forget that each country, each city within a country has its own challenges. For example, I learned that Portugal has a lot of talent (I already knew that but it was good to experience it again) but very few startups. Most students have no desire to do a startup and the few tech companies that are there have a hard issue finding funding. Especially shocking is the lack of private funding. Mostly all money comes from either the government or European funds.Thankfully, this is changing and there are a bunch of guys pushing for change. On one side you have the Pirates, with members pushing TEDx events or Sandbox Network events across the country. On the other side, you see guys like Diamantino Costa, Chairman at Critical Software and general partner at Critical Ventures, one of the most successful tech companies in Portugal that is trying to fund tech projects not only in Portugal but across Europe.

Anyways, going back to Spain and Madrid in particular, we have one hell of a week! FICOD is here and we’ll have some amazing speakers coming in, including Tim O’Reilly, Gary Vaynerchuck or our beloved co-founder Chris McCann. :D So definitely check it out! Here we go!

Madrid StartupDigest is curated by:
Alex Barrera – Founder of Press42 (@42press)

What’s Going on in the Madrid Startup Community

FICOD (Spanish/English)
When: Tues Nov 22, 9:00am – Thur Nov 24
Where: Palacio de Congresos, Madrid

Definitely the must-go event of the week. Literally everybody will attend, ranging from investors to all of the most rperesentative entrepreneurs from Spain and several cool US friends (Tim O’Reilly, Gary Vaynerchuck, Chris McCann, etc.).

Inspirational 2011 (Spanish/English)
When: Wed Nov 23, 8:30am
Where: Palacio Duques de Pastrana, Madrid

The only event dedicated entirely to advertising and digital communication in Spain, there are some interesting talks here too. They’re a little unlike because they fight against FICOD for the timeslot but some impressive speakers here.

Founder Meet (FICOD) (Spanish)
When: Thur Nov 24, 11:00am – 1:00pm
Where: Palacio de Congresos,Madrid

While inside FICOD, I wanted to mark this event because I think it’s badly needed. Founder Meet is a speed dating event between founders so that you can find a co-founder or partner to help you with your project. It’s a very neat idea that I’m sure is going to be helpful to plenty of people.

iWeekend Universidad Madrid (Spanish)
When: Fri Nov 25, 12:00am
Where: Edificio Telefónica, Calle Gran Vía 28, Madrid

iWeekend comes back this next weekend! With a target of capturing the imagination of our students, I’m sure they’ll make a splash and uncover some entrepreneurs within the students.

Hi people! How has your week been? I’m back from an amazing Barcelona Scrum Week. Super tired, but excited! Lots of great ideas. We managed to get some swag shirts from the guys at RunRoom (also know as runrun; yeah, our English accent sucks. :P).The corporate culture talk we gave was a blast and we had a lot of fun giving it. This week I’ll also be away from Madrid, but on a fun trip to Porto for the Startup Pirates Battle! I’ll be talking with startups there ,so if you’re one of them, ping me in advance. ;)As I’ve been doing previous weeks, here’s some interesting news of the week. First, 17 ways to persuade people is an amazing post on tips and tricks with their corresponding scientific base that you can use when giving a talk. Amazingly, swearing is great for talks! (Yay! I knew it!). Another of my favourite posts this week comes from my good friend Paul, talking about why startups should use English always, no exception. It’s definitely a must read that also has some great links.

This week Mini Seedcamp is happening in Barcelona; if you happen to be around the area, do drop by and try to sneak in cause it’s probably worth it.

Ok, so off we go. Let’s kick it with this week’s events. Wooohoooo!

Madrid StartupDigest is curated by:
Alex Barrera – Founder of Press42 (@42press)

What’s Going on in the Madrid Startup Community

V Congreso periodismo en red (Spanish)
When: Tues Nov 15, 8:30am – Wed Nov 16 7:00pm
Where: Fac. de CC de la Información, Av. Complutense (Metro Ciudad Universitaria). Madrid

If, like me, you work with the media, this might be an interesting event to attend. Plenty of media people will be here, from Vocento to 20 Minutos, RTVE, etc.

Mobile Web Development (Spanish)
When: Tues Nov 15, 7:00pm
Where: CAMON, Plaza de Moncloa, 1, Madrid

If you want to learn how to do mobile development, this is a great event to start with. They’ll talk about the theory on how to build apps and will walk through a real-life case.

Iniciador (Spanish)
When: Wed Nov 16, 7:00pm
Where: GarAJE. c/ Matilde Díez 11, Madrid

How to be startup from the music is the theme for this month’s talk. Amazing line-up, Aviador Dro, Electric Nana and Pelacha, moderated by Sebas Muriel, VP of corporate Affairs at Tuenti. If you love music, this is the must go event of the week!

I Jornada Estatal RITSI (Spanish)
When: Thurs Nov 17, 12:00am
Where: Universidad de Alcalá,Madrid

Meeting for Computer Science students on Agile Methodologies and Cloud computing with talks from the major tech companies in Spain, Microsoft, Indra, Cisco or Tuenti. Not sure what they’ll talk about or even if it’s worth it, but if you’re looking for a job, this is probably a great place to get onto the recruiters’ radars. :P (that’s if you want to work there, hehe).

DevOps: HAProxy (Spanish)
When: Thurs Nov 17, 7:30pm
Where: Oficinas de Tuenti, Plaza de las Cortes 2, planta 4, Madrid

My good friend Ricardo will go all ninja on you and he will explain how Tuenti does load balancing with HAProxy.

Foro BAN Madri+d (Spanish)
When: Fri Nov 18, 9:30am
Where: Salón de Actos de PromoMadrid. Suero de Quiñones, 34. Madrid

And on the investor side, you can check out the Madrid Business Angel investor forum that will be held this week. It tends to be pretty large, but it might be a good experience to check how startups pitch there and what questions fly around.

8/11/2011

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Gooooood morning, Startupnam! Waking up in Barcelona this week (yeah, I know, I’m on the road again). I’m here for the Scrum Weekso swing by and say hi if you’re around.I was impressed by the number of emails I got last week about the immigration issues in Europe. Not only I got emails from people having problems in Spain, but in other countries like Germany as well (via Twitter):”We actually have to wait 3 months for a new US employee to arrive because of VISA. Should be much easier!”

So again, as I said last week, it’s a disgrace that we’re behaving like this. Not only that, it seems that verbal attacks on foreign are getting harsher. This past week, a good friend told me he had to sustain these attacks in the university. That professors were attacking him for not being Spanish and because he spoke English. I can’t even start to describe how ashamed I am of those behaviours. How mistaken these people are and how they can’t see past their miserable lives…

It’s sad to think that high qualified foreign are being accused of taking our jobs. Not only is this not true, but it’s actually quite the opposite, diversity is needed for innovation. Yeah, that innovation that politicians love to through around.

Anyway, other interesting news of the week I’ve posted on the Press42 Facebook page, Traction verticals (which appeared on our reading list Digest) on different ways your startup can do PR and get exposure, four destructive myths most companies still live by (this one should be read and printed in many companies) or the current status of raising seed and series A rounds for startups.

And after this rant, off we go to the events of the week!

Madrid StartupDigest is curated by:

What’s Going on in the Madrid Startup Community

InterQue (Spanish)
When: Fri Nov 11, 9:30am – 7:15pm
Where: La Casa Encendida, Ronda Valencia, 2, Madrid

One of the most interesting events this week. Opening up the program, my good friend Antonella Brogllia from TEDxMadrid, and a bunch of other good friends will be talking in different round tables. From online revolutions, to education 2.0, going through online journalism or magic 2.0.

iWeekend (Spanish)
When: Fri Nov 11, 5:00pm
Where: garAJE, calle Matilde Díez nº11, Madrid

Named, the Spanish Startup Weekend, it brings entrepreneurs, developers, designers, etc., together for a weekend of coding and working on new projects. A definitely must attend this week if you’re looking for inspiration, developers or co-founders.

6th Annual Social Responsability Forum (Spanish/English)
When: Fri Nov 11, 3:30pm – Sat Nov 12, 3:00pm
Where: Caixa Forum, Paseo del Prado, 36, Madrid

If you’re into the social entrepreneurship and Social Responsability areas, this forum is definitely a must go. With people like Erik Joule SVP from Levi Strauss, Sarah Murray from the Financial Times or Indy Johar, founder of The Hub, I think it’s a great weekend starter.
