Want to learn how to build your own website? Already have your own Tumblr/Wordpress/etc site, but want to have more control over it? Interested in learning to program but want to start small? This beginner course will guide you through the basics of HTML and CSS, give you some readily-applicable skills, and answer any questions you may have along the way.

A meeting we’ll hold once a month to discuss numerous topics surrounding Design, Development, Mobile and the Web in general. Topics will be chosen closer to the day, with any and all suggestions being considered. Based on the number of participants, guest speakers from various companies and background will be invited to present topics.

What’s Going on in the Geneva Startup Community

Les pique-niques de la Muse ont lieu tous les lundis midis. Ouvert à tous, que vous soyez étudiant, porteur de projet ou entrepreneur en herbe, vous êtes le bienvenu. Le concept est simple: chaque participant apporte son pique-nique et partage ses défis et ses besoins du moment lors d’un tour de table. Des rencontres surprenantes se nouent chaque lundi dans une ambiance décontractée de réseautage et d’entraide. Évènement gratuit, annoncez de préférence votre présence à musekeeper@la-muse.ch.

Cet atelier, organisé chaque trimestre par le Service de la promotion économique, en collaboration avec la Cité des métiers et de la formation, a pour but de sensibiliser les participants sur tous les aspects pratiques liés à la création d’entreprise et de les informer sur les pièges à éviter. L’atelier sera présenté par M. Patrick Schefer, Conseiller aux entreprises au Service de la promotion économique. Entrée libre et sans inscription.

Les causeries du jeudi sont organisées par l’Observatoire technologique. Pour cette première édition, Jean-Michel Cornu présente Imagination for People: une plateforme d’innovation ouverte et ascendante. Il s’agit d’une communauté de citoyens à l’échelle internationale qui croient au pouvoir de la créativité pour trouver des solutions concrètes contribuant au mieux-vivre ensemble : l’imagination, en somme, au service du bien commun. Cette présentation servira de point de départ à la causerie qui suivra. L’accès à cet évènement est libre et gratuit.

Les petits-déjeuners des PME et des start-up, organisés par le Service de la promotion économique de Genève, traitent de thématiques diverses qui concernent directement les PME et les start-up. Ils ont pour objectif de former et d’informer les entrepreneurs, mais aussi de favoriser tant les échanges que le réseautage. Le thème de cette édition est consacré à la protection des données et à la sécurité informatique. Des experts seront présents pour répondre aux questions. Évènement gratuit, inscription obligatoire sur Internet.

La 21e Journée de rencontre de l’Observatoire technologique se propose d’illustrer quelques unes des nombreuses formes que peuvent prendre les modèles émergents. On y évoquera notamment les nouveaux modèles d’affaires liés aux services sur le Web, aux nouveaux modèles d’organisation et de gestion au sein du secteur privé comme du secteur public, aux nouvelles formes de monnaies ou aux nouveaux modèles d’innovation. Jean-Michel Cornu de la Fondation Internet Nouvelle Génération est notamment l’un des invités. La conférence est libre et gratuite mais l’inscription est souhaitée.

Hackday
When: From 09:00, Staturday (2011.11.19) to 23:00 Sunday (2011.11.20)
Where: бизнеÑ-центра “Ильич” Ул. БелооÑтровÑкаÑ, д.8. (Business center “Ylich”, Belostrovskaya street 8)

A two-day event where IT/Web-based ideas are presented. The ideas are being developed during the course of the weekend and, finally, a competent committee announces the winners at the end of the event. The participants are consulted by the industry experts, can find potential partners or even investors. In addition to that, well experienced entrepreneurs are sharing their experiences and mentoring the younger fellows. Pre-registration is needed.

A one-day event developed by Microsoft Russia and aimed at students willing to learn more about the mobile industry and applications. Not surprisingly the emphasis is placed on Windows Phone 7. The day includes seminars and workshops. Pre-registration is needed.

What’s Going on in the Michigan Startup Community

This is an unusual event to post in this list as it’s on the west side of the state, but it’s MichBio’s 7th Annual Expo & Conference. The largest gathering of biosciences professionals in the state attracting approximately 500 participants and more than 50 exhibitors last year. One of the events on the roster of activities will be where Michigan’s new and emerging biosciences companies will present before an audience of venture capitalists, angel investors and institutional investors. Five presenters/companies this month take the stage for ten minutes each, five minutes to demo and five minutes to answer questions, followed by open announcements and community networking. Some of the companies presenting include MyMentalSpace, Chext, Battle Stations, among others. Register here.

What’s Going on in the Indianapolis Startup Community

Indy Cocoa Heads

At this month’s event, learn about developing apps for the enterprise. CocoaHeads Indianapolis is a monthly gathering of local Mac and iOS developers to discuss building great software. Whether you are building software for Apple’s platforms on a full-time basis, are a hobbyist or are just interested in learning more about the development platform, we hope to serve and educate the central Indiana area.

Share experiences and help each other along the path of being a software developer by day, and working on a side project or business by night.

Chris Shinkle, Development Manager at SEP, will present on Sprint and Release Planning. Chris will discuss the importance of defining what to build and how this information is used to effectively plan sprints and releases. He will discuss the approach SEP uses for defining a product and how the outputs from this activity are used to plan sprints and releases.

The subject for this luncheon is “Marcadia Biotech’s Sale to Roche: What’s next for its leaders?” In December 2010 Carmel-based Marcadia Biotech’s owners pocketed at least $287 million in its sale to Roche. What’s next for them? Plan to attend as Fritz French, former CEO of Marcadia and Kent Hawryluk talk about the evolvement of the sale, what’s next for them, and the “home run” for Marcadia’s investors.

Discrete Event Simulation: It’s just not for breakfast anymore.

Trying to get a handle on the behavior of some ‘thing’ whose characteristics are non-deterministic before you have to build or buy it? There’s a toolkit for that! This month’s talk will be a introduction to the basics of the Python simulation toolkit (SimPy). We’ll cover some of the basics of simulating systems and see how SimPy can give you a handle on how things are going to behave before they
actually exist. Don’t fear the topic! This talk will focus is on developing system behavior intuition not simulation as an end in and of itself.

This month’s topic is “Workforce Management: Satisfying the Needs of Employers.” So, come hear Todd Richardson, Senior Vice President, Global Human Resources and General Counsel at ExactTarget; Doug Rowe, Founder and Director of Operations at ProfyleTracker; and a third panelist to be announced soon.

These panelists will share insights into some of challenges and opportunities that they have experienced in their own businesses as well as positive and negative trends they observe as having an impact on the tech sector in the near and long term.
