StartupDigest Health – August 12, 2011

12/08/2011

For newcomers: StartupDigest Health is the members-only weekly email newsletter of the best articles in the health technology industry.

You can become a member for free here.

————————————————————————————————————–

Welcome back to StartupDigest Health, the members-only guide to what you need to read in the healthcare technology community.

This week’s edition focuses on vendors needing to provide native applications and more intelligence to get EHRs to “play nicely” with mobile devices, gamification being seen as the next frontier in mobile, web, and social technology, the healthcare industry creating IT jobs faster than other industries, and emerging home patient monitoring technologies.

This week Robert Scoble interviewed me highlighting the power of getting answers from a network of thousands of physicians and the value of personalizing health information to each individual’s needs.

- Ron

StartupDigest Health is curated by:
Ron Gutman – Founder & CEO of HealthTap; Curator of TEDxSiliconValley

What You Need to Read This Week

As mobile becomes faster, powerful and more portable, more doctors are interested in leveraging mobile devices. Smartphone penetration among physicians will jump from 24% to 67% by 2015 and tablet use is also expected to increase. The digital visit is in the near future — where a doctor’s iPad, EHR system, and patient monitoring are fully integrated, but physicians are demanding more features to make that become a reality.

Engaging Patients with “Gamified” Mobile Care
By Melody Smith Jones, Healthcare IT Solutions

Gamification may seem like the new “buzz” word, but it’s actually a revolutionary addition to the field of health. This article reviews several articles on the use of gamification in health — from Mashable, Mobihealth, and more. It’s the key to increasing engagement in our health, which will help all of us lead healthier lives.

Healthcare creating IT jobs faster than other industries
By Ken Terry, FierceHealthcareIT

New Bureau of Labor Statistics report says that the healthcare industry is creating IT jobs faster than any other industry. Why? Partially due to infusion of federal funds, but also because of the new technology trends we’re seeing and the huge opportunity to revolutionizing an ailing system.

Emerging Home Patient Monitoring Technologies
By Shawn Riley, Health Technica

Healthcare is no longer limited to the four walls of your physician’s office due to telemedicine and other growing fields. Many of the catalysts that are of home monitoring and telemedicine technologies are consistent with drivers for interactive health – mobile networks, wireless sensors, secure data management, etc. These technologies are going to be especially valuable in elderly populations and among people with chronic disease.
