Good Morning, Toronto Startups and Entrepreneurs!Happy Thanksgiving – I hope you are all extremely satiated and filled with enough Tryptophan to keep you in a coma for most of the day! If by chance you’re not reading this on your mobile phone, outside, in the amazing and warm sun (that has somehow returned) … get outside and squeeze in another day of summer!

This week is packed with events — whether you want to geek-out, network and meet other folks in the community or listen to some great keynotes — there’s something in the mix for you. Wednesday evening brings both DemoCamp 30 (I can’t believe you’ve reached 30 already!) and Toronto Tech Meetup.

There are a number of upcoming events finally showing up in the calendar and next week there are two big ones — E-commerce Camp8 (which is sponsored by OrderDynamics, a super-innovative e-commerce platform that everyone should know about) and HTML5 Meet & Learn. In other good news, Startup Weekend Toronto is back on Nov 18-20, 2011 to officially close Global Entrepreneurship Week and is part of the Global Startup Battle! If you haven’t heard of Startup Weekend, it involves local developers, marketers, designers, enthusiasts and who join forces to start companies in just 54 hours. Please let us know if we’re missing any key events and we’ll be glad to include them in future digests through our submission form.

What You Need to Read This Week

It’s happening: iPad is eating consoles’ lunch
By Christian Zibreg, 9to5Mac

Reports from Nintendo talk about sales declines and price cuts. Most of their losses are iPad’s gains. As an industry, consoles used to be 80% of the gaming market and today are only 40%. This article talks about those trends and has a great infographic at the bottom breaking down tablet usage, gaming and social media behavior and platform metrics.

Alibaba Rolls Out Mobile-Phone Operating System
By Owen Fletcher, The Wall Street Journal

While we are mostly focused on what North American platforms are doing, we should take note of new developers in China. Smartphone adoption as an absolute number already higher than that in the U.S. and the rate of 3G adoption in China is accelerating. Alibaba’s announcement around their mobile operating system is just a preview of upcoming trends in China and Asia.

Tablets Give E-Commerce a Real-World Feel
By Claire Cain Miller, The New York Times

I have been discussing with folks when people choose to use their phone vs PC vs tablet. Behavior is still mixed but it’s interesting that 40% of people still choose to use their tablet when a PC is available to them. Something about the user experience of tablets is appealing and even drawing consumers to spend money through their shopping/browsing experiences on those devices.

What’s the best-case scenario for Nokia?
By Kevin C. Tofel, GigaOM

The Microsoft/Nokia discussion continues here with an opinion piece from Kevin Tofel. Looks like under the best of scenarios, Nokia is still trading market share by abandoning Symbian for Windows 7. For Microsoft, they will not see any volume uptick in time for holiday this year.

34% of iPhone Users Think They Have 4G [STUDY]
By Charlie White, Mashable

I love knowing what the consumer thinks and this study goes to show that while we live in our mobile bubble and talk about download speeds, 3G, 4G, HTML5, etc., the rest of America really has no idea what the difference is between 3G and 4G. In fact, 34% of iPhone owners think they have a 4G phone already. It’s always good to remind ourselves of our perspective versus the rest of populations.

5 Trends Shaping the Mobile Gaming Industry

Mobile phone and tablet gaming sales are hit almost $900M in 2010. Gaming is still the most significant category for mobile apps. Here’s a refreshed trend update on the space.

I’ve seen a lot of “tips for app development” articles and they are generally around design. This article is a good mix of design, product, and business perspective that I think is useful for every developer.

Teams are between 4-10 people, and consist of about 50% technical people and 50% non-technical. You then spend the entire weekend getting advice from professional mentors, and building a proof of concept, demo, or sometimes even a finished product, to present in front of a panel of judges on Sunday night.
