What’s Going on in the Dallas Startup Community

Ruby Brigade – Event driven programming with event machine

When: Tuesday, Nov 1, 7-9pm

This month they’ll look at creating database connections from Plain Ol’ Ruby and then event-driven programming with EventMachine. What is event-driven programming, and how do you write event driven apps?

TeXchange

When: Wednesday, Nov 2, 5:30pm – 8:30pm

DFW Member showcase. Discover the innovation that is going on in your local community, and explore what it means to be a part of Dallas’ premier technology networking association by attending the first-ever TeXchange Member Showcase. Open to everyone — Free registation includes appetizers and a drink ticket.

Startup Nights

When: Wednesday, Nov 2, 6pm – Thu, November 3, 2am

Where: Cohabitat,2517 Thomas St., Dallas, TX

StartupNights is an open house, coworking, startup meetup, jam session, and community gathering all rolled into one evening a week!

SparkEd

When: Thursday, Nov 3, 6:30pm – 9:30pm

Where: Museum of Nature & Science (Fair Park), S. 2nd Ave. & Grand Ave.,Dallas, TX 75210

Bring a focus to educational innovation in Dallas. How often do you get to brainstorm with a group of smart, random individuals? If you can’t remember the last time you did, bring your ideas and an open mind to the brainstorming event of the season.

Representatives of educational organizations, both for-profit and non-profit, will bring their challenges to a group of un-like-minded individuals who are filled with good ideas and a desire to help. After short presentations by three organizations, interested participants will join members of the SMU Innovation Gym to ideate solutions to the challenge of their choice in one of Dallas’ most unique settings. This is a pitch-free stage so you won’t have to worry about being solicited for a donation or finding a monetary solution to a problem.

Startup Happy Hour 2.0 / Alex’s Birthday

Alex Muse is turning 40 and to celebrate he is hosting a party. Come enjoy a few games of WhirlyBall and LaserTag to commemorate my 40th year here on the planet earth.

AT&T Mobile App Hackathon

When: ·Saturday, Nov 5, 10am – 9pm

Where: AT&T Foundry, 2900 West Plano Pkwy, Plano TX 75075

Dev-ing. Mobile. Cloud. APIs. Good food. Awesome prizes. Interested in building your own app? This hackathon will introduce you the the latest cutting edge tools to deploy your own app with a website backend, fully hosted in the cloud. Alternatively, you can come pitch your idea and scout for developer talent, who can help you build your app. Short lightning talks in the morning so you can learn something new and dev support from Apigee, AT&T, Sencha and Alcatel Lucent all day.

DEC Presents: Joint Ventures, Avenues for Business Growth

When: Thurs Oct20 10:15am

Where: Dublin Entrepreneur Center 7003 Post Road Dublin

Joe Keglewitsch will discuss how joint ventures can be a cost-effective (and less capital intensive) way to grow your business. Joe will outline different ways joint ventures can be used to achieve this end and the key terms and considerations to be addresssed when entering into a joint venture. Joint ventures is another potential avenue for business owners to grow or strengthen their business. You will learn the basic knowledge that you would need to negotiate the basic terms of a joint venture and to help identify problems to be avoided.

Code Camp

When: Sat Oct 22 8:00am

Where: TechColumbus 1275 Kinnear Road Columbus

Code Camp is a relatively new type of community event (following the Code Camp Manifesto) where developers learn from their peers. All are welcome to attend and speak. Code Camps have been wildly successful elsewhere, and we’re going to bring that success to central Ohio. Sessions will range from lightning talks to chalk talks to more formal presentations.
