Resource of the Week

The Business of Infographics
By Mark Smiciklas, Social Media Explorer

Given shortening attention spans and the premium placed on sharing, it is no surprise that infographics are increasing in popularity. In order to produce one that meets your goals (e.g. gaining mindshare), develop a format that will allow you to tell a simple story. As there are a variety of approaches, consider the style that will match your startup’s voice and how you can innovate on existing examples of data visualization.

SEO – I’m guessing most readers know it’s the acronym for search engine optimization, but what does it really mean for your business? When something becomes as assumed as SEO has in marketing, it is easy to gloss over it, which is why this week’s recommended reading walks you through how to leverage great content. If you have a startup marketing resource you’d like to share, send the link to tony@startupdigest.com.

If you ask people about SEO, “links” is probably one of the first words that will come to mind. However, don’t underestimate the power of content. Rand Fishkin at SEOmoz gives 1-2-3 steps to figuring out what people want to find when they search for something, and crucially, what would make the page they land on worth sharing. You can become a member for free here.

————————————————————————————————————–

Welcome back to StartupDigest Marketing, the members-only weekly guide for making marketing meaningful to your company’s goals.

While the post below from David Hornik of August Capital is from 2006 (note the reference to Tickle), his point is as true now as it was then. When it comes to startup marketing, unlike other aspects of the company like finance or engineering, everyone (including the VC) seems to have an opinion.

If you have a startup marketing resource you’d like to share with your fellow readers, please send the link to me at tony@startupdigest.com.

Resource of the Week

VCs are Marketing Geniuses
By David Hornik, VentureBlog

I empathize with anyone doing marketing at a startup who has wondered, “I don’t give developers feedback on how they’re coding, so why does it seem like everyone has something to say when it comes to marketing?”

One of my thoughts from reading the post is, if you’re really being honest, don’t you sometimes have opinions on product flow (which I’m sure your UI/X person can’t get enough of)? After taking a step back, you can better appreciate that getting perspectives from other disciplines can be quite valuable.

Part of the fun of startups is that there is a lot to learn from each other while trusting each person to do what s/he is best at.
