A lot of great events this week with a VEF year-end BBQ with Facebook’s Jonathan Ehrlich (special discount for SD readers below), Eclipse DemoCamp and Startup Drinks on Wednesday. For those devs/hackers, you may be interested in the Cassandra talk (Cassandra is used by Digg, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit & more) and the ruby lightning talks.

Also, for startups who are still thinking of applying to Grow 2011, the deadline has been extended.

More than that, Salt’s design as an efficient communication layer holds the future promise of competition with state-management tools such as Puppet or Chef. Salt is also laying the groundwork for higher-level tools such as a virtual-machine provisioning layer (Butter) as well as competition for monitoring and alerting tools like Nagios/ZenOSS and Munin/Cacti.
