What’s Going on in the Melbourne Startup Community

Melbourne Scala User Group (Free)

This is a meeting for Scala enthusiasts. Scala is a general purpose programming language designed to express common programming patterns in a concise, elegant, and type-safe way. Ben will be presenting a practical example of using Scala, for complex HTML document generation.

Connect Community Hacker Space (Free)

These smaller, shorter sessions are intended to provide continuity between the larger monthly weekend meetings. These sessions are typically held in Camberwell, but may occur at other member’s residences (often when they are hosting a session in a particular area of expertise).

Melbourne Patterns Group (Free)

The Melbourne Patterns Group had its first meeting on February 3rd 1999, and has gathered for discussion of software design patterns regularly ever since. The meeting format is two part, designed to satisfy patterns newcomers and more experienced practitioners alike.

Social Media Melbourne or #socialmelb is a weekly social gathering of passionate and inspirational Melburnians who have one thing in common: social media. On Fridays at 8am, we collaborate and share ideas, stories and views on a variety of topics from startups to business strategy, the latest news and social change to the latest joints worth a visit around Melbourne. Everyone and anyone is welcome to join us, as long as you come with an open mind.

Melbourne Jelly Meetup (Free)

Melbourne Jelly is a fortnightly co-working event where folks from all disciplines get together at a pre-determined location and share a working environment.

Startup Weekend Melbourne ($99 – Weekend Event)

When: Friday 06 May 11 at 6:30:00 PM
Where: Sensis HQ, 222 Liverpool St, Melbourne

Startup Weekend is a non-profit, community-building event that brings together entrepreneurs of all backgrounds including software developers, marketers, designers, and other enthusiasts to start companies in just 54 hours. The participants that attend have 60 seconds to make a pitch (optional), the pitches are whittled down to the top ideas, and then teams form around the ideas to come out with several developed companies or projects. Finally, the weekend culminates with demonstrations in front of an audience of judges and potential investors.
