Happy Monday! We have had some truly jam-packed and full of awesome tech start-up events this Fall in Houston and I don’t think any of them have me as excited to announce that Steve Blank, a globally recognized leader in the technology start-up community is coming to Houston to talk at the Lean Startup Circle monthly meeting. Steve Blank is a writer, founder/investor in multiple Silicon Valley startups and is currently teaching Entrepreneurship in 3 major universities.Come to the Houston Lean Startup Circle meeting at the Houston Technology Center this Thursday, December 8th at 6:30pm to hear Steve talk about Customer Development and share stories around his experience in the Houston energy industry.

Happy Monday! AIR (Accessibility Internet Rally) Houston is a web design competition that increases awareness of the tools and techniques that make the Internet accessible to everyone – including people with disabilities. AIR Houston will have their next competition on November 12th, and they are accepting applications for developer teams. Come tighten up your development and design skills while serving a worthy cause and register a team.

Make sure you register this week for the Engineer to Entrepreneur (E2E) event on October 8th, hosted by SpaceUp Houston and the Houston Technology Center. Hear about successful tech startups that are aerospace spin-offs and then find your engineering dream team during the co-founder dating style forum to connect entrepreneurs with aerospace engineers.

Android Game Development – Lessons from the Trenches
When: Tuesday October 4th, 2011 6:30PM

Allen Halsted, professional game developer, is preparing to release his first game, Hacker Wars, from his own shop, Random Features, Inc. Hacker Wars is a mixture of classic video game memes presented with the latest graphical eye candy on the Android platform. Allen plans to discuss the major differences between a normal application and a game engine. Then using source code from Hacker Wars, he will demonstrate scene construction, the render loop, a finite state machine and basic sprite animation.

 

Innovation Conference & Showcase

SpaceUp Houston and the Houston Technology Center partnered to host a unique opportunity for local aerospace engineers to connect with Houston entrepreneurs. The evening will include information on businesses that have successfully spun off aerospace technology into commercial products and services. Houston Technology Center Orientation

If you didn’t make it to the Houston Technology Center’s Tech Champs breakfast last week, you missed two surprise guests: former astronauts Ellen Ochoa and Bernard Harris. They came out to show their support to the Iron Plaid Robotics team – an award winning local High School All-Girl team of robotic engineers!

Registration has now opened for SpaceUp Houston June 25th and space is limited to only 40 people so don’t delay in registering. The cost to attend the 1-day workshop is only $10 and includes lunch and the opportunity to create and implement the SpacePoints mobile game that will reward people for learning about and sharing the excitement around space exploration, research, and aerospace-related innovation and discovery.

PyHou Tutorial – Quick and Easy Web Applications, Sharing Your Work

This session will cover sharing your work with people who don’t want to (or can’t) use the command line. To this end we will demonstrate creating small-scale web applications using Flask, a microframework for web applications. Newcomers are welcome.

Happy Monday! This week is the Houston Technology Center’s annual Gala to celebrate entrepreneurship. I am so excited and honored to be able to attend this year’s Gala and see who the featured entrepreneurs will be.

I want to mention that next week, May 16th- 20th, is Celebrate Enterprise: a 4-day, multi-event celebration for C-level executives, business leaders, and entrepreneurs to share ideas, gather insight, and celebrate capitalism and the entrepreneurial spirit in Houston.

Coming up June 25th, SpaceUp Houston is hosting their 2nd SpaceUp event that will be a 1-day conference around creating a geolocation, space-focused mobile app/game called “SpacePoints”. They are currently seeking sponsors and registrants. If you know anything about mobile app development or want to help design the rules and structure of the game, then they want you!
