Cocoa Dev Central: Learn Objective-C

While it’s slightly dated and missing a few newer constructs like protocols, Scott Stevenson has put together an extremely clear and concise intro to Objective-C. This 11-step intro covers the basics of calling methods, class design, memory management and more. If you’re looking to get started with iOS dev, this is a good place to learn the language first before jumping into the framework.

Welcome back to StartupDigest Hacker, the members-only guide to what you need to read in the hacking community every week.

This week’s edition highlights Git being simpler than you think, writing Vim plugins, thoughts on “making things” from the co-founder of Hunch and Flickr, why developers never use state machines, and recommendations on how to improve your Unix skills.

What You Need to Read This Week

Git Is Simpler Than You Think
By Nick Farina, nfarina.com

“And because of Git’s explosive popularity, it’s a total Emperor-Has-No-Clothes situation. If you’re anything like me, you probably wondered why you were the only stupid person on the planet who didn’t intuitively get Git already.”

Writing Vim Plugins
By Steve Losh, stevelosh.com

“A couple of people have asked me if I’d write a guide to creating Vim plugins. I don’t feel confident enough to write an official ‘guide,’ but I do have some advice for Vim plugin authors that might be
useful.”

Make Things
By Caterina Fake, caterina.net

“And this made me think. People ask me who inspires me. This question often stumps me because I have been inspired in my work by stuff that people make.”

Why Developers Never Use State Machines
By Alan Skorkin, SKORKS

“But it got me thinking, how many times in my developer career have I actually used a state machine (either separate library or even hand-rolled abstraction)? The answer is zero times – which surprised the hell out of me since state machines really are very useful.”

Learning Unix
By Miguel de Icaza, tirania.org

“As I meet new Unix hackers using Linux or Mac, sometimes I am surprised at how few Unix tricks they know. It is sometimes painful to watch developers perform manual tasks on the shell. What follows are my recommendations on how to improve your Unix skills.”

What You Need to Read This Week

Learn Vim Progressively
From yannesposito.com

“Want to learn vim (the best text editor known to human kind) the fastest way possible. I suggest you a way. Start by learning the minimal to survive, then integrate slowly all tricks.”

Want to Write a Compiler? Just Read These Two Papers.
From prog21.dadgum.com

“Imagine you don’t know anything about programming, and you want learn how to do it. You take a look at Amazon.com, and there’s a highly recommended set of books by Knute or something with a promising title, The Art of Computer Programming, so you buy them. Now imagine that it’s more than just a poor choice, but that all the books on programming are at written at that level. That’s the situation with books about writing compilers.”

10 Papers Every Programmer Should Read (At Least Twice)
By Michael Feathers, Object Mentor

“So, I was thinking about this and trying to not to get too glum. I realized that instead of complaining, I could help by pointing to some papers which are easily available online and which (to me at least) point to some of the most interesting ideas about software. To me, these are classic papers which contain deep ‘things you oughta know’ about code – the material you work with.”

If I Launched a Startup
By Ryan Roberts, Startup Lawyer

“Here’s what I’d do in the beginning.”

GitHub Flow
By Scott Chacon, scottchacon.com

“I travel all over the place teaching Git to people and nearly every class and workshop I’ve done recently has asked me what I think about git-flow. I always answer that I think that it’s great – it has taken a system (Git) that has a million possible workflows and documented a well tested, flexible workflow that works for lots of developers in a fairly straightforward manner. It has become something of a standard so that developers can move between projects or companies and be familiar with this standardized workflow. However, it does have its issues.”
