Events have picked up this week. My pick of the week is Heavy Chefs, but it’s totally booked out already. Seems like a lifetime ago that I spoke at Heavy Chefs to a small crowd in a smoky bar (it was actually about 2 years ago). Now it’s held at trendy offices, with plenty of sponsored snacks and drinks. Have a great week.

StartupDigest Enterprise – September 30, 2011

30/09/2011

For newcomers: StartupDigest Enterprise is the members-only weekly email newsletter of the best articles in the enterprise technology industry.

You can become a member for free here.

————————————————————————————————————–

Welcome back to StartupDigest Enterprise, the members-only guide to what you need to read in the enterprise technology industry every week. This week’s edition focuses on Marc Andreessen thinking that the clock is ticking on Oracle, the first annual BoxWorks conference from the Box.net founders, enterprise app makers not fully embracing HTML5, enterprise social networking, and Deloitte Australia’s CEO Giam Swiegers going into detail about how the audit and consulting firm is using Yammer’s tool.- Trent & Euwyn

Euwyn Poon – CEO of Opzi

What You Need to Read This Week

Marc Andreessen thinks that the clock is ticking on Oracle and other old-line software and infrastructure companies. His evidence: not a single one of Andreessen-Horowitz’s startup investments use Oracle software. They all use cloud-based alternatives instead.

At 26-years-old, Box.net founder Aaron Levie stands on stage in front of 350 customers and press at his company’s first annual conference, BoxWorks, held this week in San Francisco. He had just turned down a buyout offer worth more than $500 million. That evening, Box.net hosted a party where the entertainment was one of his favorite bands from middle school, Third Eye Blind. Levie has come a long way since middle school. In fact, he and his company have emerged as iconic figures for the new wave of enterprise technology.

While developers working on business apps agree that development of HTML5 is coming along, they’re not ready to abandon native applications. At Mobilize 2011, the theme was hybrid.

Once there is an enterprise standard and everyone belongs to “the club,” it isn’t a club anymore and people clam up. Herein lies the paradox of enterprise social networks.

Deloitte’s Yammer Time
By David Strom, ReadWriteWeb

A video interview of Deloitte Australia’s CEO Giam Swiegers goes into some interesting details about how the audit and consulting firm is using Yammer’s tool. Swiegers provides lots of insights in how half of his 5,000 staffers are connecting on up to 150 conversations daily.
