There is so much happening in Cape Town each week in the Tech space, so I’m really excited and honored to be taking over the curating of the StartupDigest. In order to really make sure each of us gets to hear about everything worth hearing about, I need YOUR help. If you are the organizer of an event, please let me know. What’s Going on in the Cape Town Startup Community This Week

Markex Conference (Pre-registration free or R30 at door)
When: Tuesday, 23 August 2011, 10h00 – 17h00 (also Wednesday & Thursday)
Where: International Convention Centre

A trade exhibition focussing on marketing, promotions, and special events. Take a look at the line up of speakers – they look impressive.

27 Dinner (Not sure – around R100 to R150)
When: Saturday, 27 August, 2011 at 18h00
Where: Wild Fig

It’s time for the bi-monthly 27 Dinner in Cape Town. 54 people have already signed up, and there’s still a week to go, so it looks like it will be a very full house next Saturday. Christine Bombai, the Digital Marketing Manager at Old Mutual, is one of the 2 speakers for the evening (the 2nd one is still to be announced).

Social Coffee Sydney

Each Friday morning from 7am, a bunch of social media and advertising bloggers meet for coffee and conversation at one of Sydney’s best cafes – Single Origin. It is more than a meeting of minds, it is a feast of ideas, and a cacophony of good humoured banter.

Sydney PCUG
When: Tues July 26, 6:00pm
Where: 1st Floor, Sydney Mechanics School of Arts, 280 Pitt Street

Presenter at the main meeting is Mikaela Lancaster from NineMSN and Microsoft’s “Windows Live” team. Here we’ll learn that Hotmail will celebrate its 15th Birthday in July, we’ll learn about “key features” that “people may not be familiar with,” such as the mysterious-sounding “sweep function,” we’ll learn about the SkyDrive service and “Active View,” and we’ll learn some “fun Hotmail facts.”

brainmates: Turning Ideas into Business Cases
When: Thurs July 28, 12:00pm
Where: Suite 906, 84 Pitt Street

In our lunchtime Product Talk, we will be looking at how to generate great product ideas, validate whether it is feasible business opportunity and turn it into a Business Case that is more likely to get approved in your organisation. We will also discuss how you can sound convincing when you present your Business Case. brainmates’ co-director & lead trainer, Nick Coster will be leading this discussion.

Startup Weekend Sydney
When: Fri July 29, 6:30pm
Where: ATP Innovations, Australian Technology Park (near Redfern train station)

Startup Weekend is a non-profit, community-building event that brings together entrepreneurs of all backgrounds including software developers, marketers, designers, and other enthusiasts to start companies in just 54 hours. The participants that attend have 60 seconds to make a pitch (optional), the pitches are whittled down to the top ideas, and then teams form around the ideas to come out with several developed companies or projects. Finally, the weekend culminates with demonstrations in front of an audience of judges and potential investors. For tickets, visit here.
