In particular, there continue to be new announcements of additional players like Card.io, Zoosh or TapBase launching mobile payments offerings (all with different approaches). Also included this week is a reaffirmation of the strategic importance of mobile payments to Google, as described by the company’s VP of Payments (who is currently being sued by former employer and online payments leader, PayPal). Lastly, we’ve included an article that reviews the four main approaches to mobile payments and the pros and cons of each.

What You Need to Know This Week

Former Admob Execs Tackle Mobile Payments, Photograph Credit Cards
By Sara Yin, PCMag

Two former AdMob execs have launched a rather novel mobile commerce platform that scans your credit card by taking a photo of it with your smartphone.

Card.io targets developers by giving them the SDK to drop into their codes. It could complement a location-based couponing service or movie ticketing app, for example.

Narrate Zoosh Introduces Ultrasonic NFC for iPhone, Android
By Clint Boulton, eWeek

Narrate’s Zoosh technology is ultrasonic NFC rolled up in software to circumvent the classic chip-based NFC services used in Google Wallet and other mobile transaction plays.

While Google prepares to get its Google Wallet mobile payment service based on traditional near field communications technology into New York and San Francisco markets this summer, a startup is taking a different tack with NFC: ultrasonics.

TapBase Introduces the Tap Mobile Payments, Loyalty and Rewards Platform
From PRWeb.com

TapBase has announced that the company has successfully completed private beta testing of its Tap mobile payments, loyalty and rewards platform and has moved another step closer to its official launch. “We’re very pleased with the progress to date”, reported CEO, Robert Mallett. “We believe our solution is attractive to both consumers and merchants; and combines the convenience and accessibility of traditional magstripe technologies with the security and flexibility of emerging technologies such as Quick Response (QR) codes and Near Field Communications (NFC).”

Google Wallet “is one of the biggest investments we’ve made at Google for a very long time”
By Sarah Clark, Near Field Communications World

“Larry and Eric personally convinced me” to make the move to Google, Osama Bedier, the company’s VP of payments, has told NFC World as he set out Google’s commitment to building an NFC platform that is open to all — and revealed that Google Wallet will eventually be able to hold keys, ID credentials and driving licenses.

4 very different mobile payment services
By Alistair Fairweather, Memeburn

Mobile payments may be the next big tech gold rush, depending on who you listen to. For something getting so much hype, and with so many start-ups popping up in the field, it is a surprisingly vague term.

There are at least a half dozen different approaches competing to become the de facto format. All of them share one thing: the use of mobile devices – mostly cell phones, but increasingly other devices such as tablets – to exchange money. But that’s just about where the similarities end. Here are four different services with four very different routes to this potential Mobile El Dorado.
