5 Across: Champions Edition

If this is a topic you know little about or you don’t really see the value of investing in a design strategy then this month’s meeting is for you! Join Meredith Moore as she helps bridge the gap between brand identity and your startup business strategy. Meredith will break down what a brand really is, why it is important, and how it applies to you and your startup. Meredith will provide basic steps for you to take, what to include and what you can wait to do later, how to find a designer, how to work with one and the price ranges for your budget.

What’s Going on in the Chicago Startup Community

Hear Patty Rioux – employee number three and MedHost director of marketing for the first 6 years — recount the early days of MedHost, describe the energy of a health tech startup, discuss their two rounds of VC funding, and a bit about the company’s acquisition.

 

Chicago Ruby Downtown: High Availability at Braintree

Uptime is important for any application, but it’s absolutely critical for a payment gateway. Braintree’s goal is zero downtime for their merchants. They tackle high availability in some unique ways using ruby as one of their main tools.

 

Jason Fried, Co-Founder of 37 Signals, Co-Author of Rework, and Inc. Magazine “Get Real” column writer will join the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce for an onstage interview and dialogue with audience members about work, life and how to maintain a balanced approach to success amidst the “noise” of daily business life.

 

Funding Feeding Frenzy creator David Culver is hosting an open house this Wednesday at VentureSHOT, the recently opened High Energy Entrepreneur Center & Incubator at 744 North Wells Street in Chicago. They’ve got some great things happening there, including Super-Ultra Collaborative Entrepreneurial Group meetings, Angel Investor and VC meet and greet sessions, coaching for presentations, and some great flex space/private offices.

 

Come hear Greg Geracie, the president of Actuation Consulting and author of “Take Charge Product Management” speak on his Three Tips to Improve Effectiveness as a Product Manager.

 

Code Academy launched their 12 week program for web development in Ruby on Rails this fall. I’ve spent some time over there myself, along with folks like 37 Signals David Heinemeier Hansson and Groupon’s Dave Hoover, and the energy and enthusiasm is phenomenal. Code academy is accepting applications now through December 10th for two 12-week programs that start in January

What’s Going on in the DC Startup Community

Paul Singh is Principal at 500 Startups — he helps Dave McClure and team run the show. We’ll have a wide-ranging conversation with Paul about customer traction, accelerators, funding, and entrepreneurial best practices. We’ll explore what 500 is looking for in their companies. DC Tech Meetup #10: Social Commerce Edition.

 

Venture Capital Outlook 2012 is part of the Potomac Tech Wire breakfast series that brings together senior executives in the Mid-Atlantic to discuss technology issues in a conversational, roundtable environment moderated by the editor of Potomac Tech Wire. The panel will focus on the overall outlook for venture capital investing in the DC area, current deal terms, technology trends, valuation issues, and predictions.

 

JOIN is a career fair, but done differently. For hiring startups only, we create a pool of qualified candidates from the requirements that companies list on the registration form. This is not a meat-market — just a high quality matching event. We have had great success in the past, with 60% of participating startups having extended offers to one or more candidates they met at JOIN. The smaller size, and pre-screened nature, allows folks to concentrate more finding good matches for their teams.

What’s Going on in the Seattle Startup Community

Mongo Seattle 2011
When: Thursday, December 1st from 8am to 8pm
Where: Bell Harbor International Conference Center, 2211 Alaskan Way, Seattle

Mongo Seattle is an annual one-day conference in Seattle dedicated to the open source, non-relational database MongoDB. MongoDB is used by a number of large-scale corporations including Craigslist, Shutterfly and foursquare, and this conference is a great primer for new adopters and experts.

 

TEDxWomen is a TEDx event that focuses on women and women’s issues. The event will be simulcast at EMP’s JBL Theater and has a speaker lineup including Barbara Walters, Mehmet Oz, Tan Le, and more.

 

MIT Enterprise Forum’s DEMO events are great events where startups can show off their work in front of a panel of judges. This DEMO event will include Avado, BookieJar, Chirpsy, Clever Rain Technologies, REDpoint International and Tilting Motor Works. Attend to network, listen and watch entrepreneurs from a number of different fields pitch.

By now you have probably heard of Lean Startups and Customer Development and their requisite buzzwords like pivot, MVP and product-market fit. But what do these terms really mean and how can you put them to work in your endeavors? Yours truly will be spreading the lean startup gospel. :)

 

If you are at all inspired by Friday’s talk, spend Saturday putting Customer Development into practice! Alline Watkins will do a deep-dive on customer development and attendees will actually apply the principles during the event.

Engage Customers and Key Prospects with Your Brand
