Good morning, everyone! Ready for another amazing week? This past week has been awesome! We had Chris, our beloved co-founder in Madrid, so we took him out for beers. :P We joined with the Tetuan Valley crew, a bunch of startup friends and we had an amazing night! Thank you all for coming, I had a lot of fun!Apart from that, this week I’ve been working hard on my own startup, Press42 to get a prototype ready for LeWeb. Yeah, I’ll be there this year too, so if any of you are going, do ping me. :) I would love to meet you! Some interesting posts from this week, 7 tips on how to get acquired. For those of you starting to look for Christmas gifts, here is a bad ass one, the Twine! (btw, I want a couple!). For those of you in the blogger arena, Om just wrote his reflections after 10 years of blogging (some interesting graphs there) and finally, startups and virality, take a look at the Pinterest story. Before we get into the events, I wanted to thank a lot of you for the kind words I’ve been getting these pasts weeks. Many of you have found interesting people at the events or had a great time at specific events. I’m super happy about that! That’s what the digest is for so I’m very glad! So let’s keep it coming! Events powa!

Where: GarAJE (Matilde Diaz, 11 Madrid)

Hello startups! I’m finally back in Madrid after a very busy week! I was in Pamplona giving a Scrum course and then the weekend in Porto for the Startup Pirates Battle, an amazing team pushing for a greater startup community in Portugal. It’s been a very interesting experience because sometimes we talk about the startup community across Europe but we forget that each country, each city within a country has its own challenges. For example, I learned that Portugal has a lot of talent (I already knew that but it was good to experience it again) but very few startups. Most students have no desire to do a startup and the few tech companies that are there have a hard issue finding funding. Especially shocking is the lack of private funding. Mostly all money comes from either the government or European funds.Thankfully, this is changing and there are a bunch of guys pushing for change. On one side you have the Pirates, with members pushing TEDx events or Sandbox Network events across the country. On the other side, you see guys like Diamantino Costa, Chairman at Critical Software and general partner at Critical Ventures, one of the most successful tech companies in Portugal that is trying to fund tech projects not only in Portugal but across Europe.

Anyways, going back to Spain and Madrid in particular, we have one hell of a week! FICOD is here and we’ll have some amazing speakers coming in, including Tim O’Reilly, Gary Vaynerchuck or our beloved co-founder Chris McCann. :D So definitely check it out! Here we go!

Madrid StartupDigest is curated by:
Alex Barrera – Founder of Press42 (@42press)

What’s Going on in the Madrid Startup Community

FICOD (Spanish/English)
When: Tues Nov 22, 9:00am – Thur Nov 24
Where: Palacio de Congresos, Madrid

Definitely the must-go event of the week. Literally everybody will attend, ranging from investors to all of the most rperesentative entrepreneurs from Spain and several cool US friends (Tim O’Reilly, Gary Vaynerchuck, Chris McCann, etc.).

Inspirational 2011 (Spanish/English)
When: Wed Nov 23, 8:30am
Where: Palacio Duques de Pastrana, Madrid

The only event dedicated entirely to advertising and digital communication in Spain, there are some interesting talks here too. They’re a little unlike because they fight against FICOD for the timeslot but some impressive speakers here.

Founder Meet (FICOD) (Spanish)
When: Thur Nov 24, 11:00am – 1:00pm
Where: Palacio de Congresos,Madrid

While inside FICOD, I wanted to mark this event because I think it’s badly needed. Founder Meet is a speed dating event between founders so that you can find a co-founder or partner to help you with your project. It’s a very neat idea that I’m sure is going to be helpful to plenty of people.

iWeekend Universidad Madrid (Spanish)
When: Fri Nov 25, 12:00am
Where: Edificio Telefónica, Calle Gran Vía 28, Madrid

iWeekend comes back this next weekend! With a target of capturing the imagination of our students, I’m sure they’ll make a splash and uncover some entrepreneurs within the students.

Hi people! How has your week been? I’m back from an amazing Barcelona Scrum Week. Super tired, but excited! Lots of great ideas. We managed to get some swag shirts from the guys at RunRoom (also know as runrun; yeah, our English accent sucks. :P).The corporate culture talk we gave was a blast and we had a lot of fun giving it. This week I’ll also be away from Madrid, but on a fun trip to Porto for the Startup Pirates Battle! I’ll be talking with startups there ,so if you’re one of them, ping me in advance. ;)As I’ve been doing previous weeks, here’s some interesting news of the week. First, 17 ways to persuade people is an amazing post on tips and tricks with their corresponding scientific base that you can use when giving a talk. Amazingly, swearing is great for talks! (Yay! I knew it!). Another of my favourite posts this week comes from my good friend Paul, talking about why startups should use English always, no exception. It’s definitely a must read that also has some great links.

This week Mini Seedcamp is happening in Barcelona; if you happen to be around the area, do drop by and try to sneak in cause it’s probably worth it.

Ok, so off we go. Let’s kick it with this week’s events. Wooohoooo!

Madrid StartupDigest is curated by:
Alex Barrera – Founder of Press42 (@42press)

What’s Going on in the Madrid Startup Community

Where: Fac. de CC de la Información, Av. Complutense (Metro Ciudad Universitaria). Madrid

Mobile Web Development (Spanish)
When: Tues Nov 15, 7:00pm
Where: CAMON, Plaza de Moncloa, 1, Madrid

If you want to learn how to do mobile development, this is a great event to start with. They’ll talk about the theory on how to build apps and will walk through a real-life case.

Iniciador (Spanish)
When: Wed Nov 16, 7:00pm
Where: GarAJE. c/ Matilde Díez 11, Madrid

How to be startup from the music is the theme for this month’s talk. Amazing line-up, Aviador Dro, Electric Nana and Pelacha, moderated by Sebas Muriel, VP of corporate Affairs at Tuenti. If you love music, this is the must go event of the week!

I Jornada Estatal RITSI (Spanish)
When: Thurs Nov 17, 12:00am
Where: Universidad de Alcalá,Madrid

Meeting for Computer Science students on Agile Methodologies and Cloud computing with talks from the major tech companies in Spain, Microsoft, Indra, Cisco or Tuenti. Not sure what they’ll talk about or even if it’s worth it, but if you’re looking for a job, this is probably a great place to get onto the recruiters’ radars. :P (that’s if you want to work there, hehe).

DevOps: HAProxy (Spanish)
When: Thurs Nov 17, 7:30pm
Where: Oficinas de Tuenti, Plaza de las Cortes 2, planta 4, Madrid

My good friend Ricardo will go all ninja on you and he will explain how Tuenti does load balancing with HAProxy.

Foro BAN Madri+d (Spanish)
When: Fri Nov 18, 9:30am
Where: Salón de Actos de PromoMadrid. Suero de Quiñones, 34. Madrid

And on the investor side, you can check out the Madrid Business Angel investor forum that will be held this week. It tends to be pretty large, but it might be a good experience to check how startups pitch there and what questions fly around.

Hi guys! How was your week? Hope that it was better than mine. It was a crazy week with the couple of talks that I gave. A lot of people are trying to add their effort to support and grow the entrepreneurial community in Spain and that’s awesome! This week there is one event that’s very special to me, the 5th edition of the Tetuan Valley Startup Schoolkick off. If you’re a startup and need some help, this is one of the best programs to attend in Spain right now. (Disclaimer: I was one of the cofounders, although I don’t work there anymore.)Anyway, so after being kicked around at Aikido this weekend (yeah I know, I have little time but I still manage to get myself kicked around :P), let’s move on to the events! Yeahh! As always, if you want your event featured on the digest, just shoot me an email. (Remember: I only cover Madrid and we also have a Barcelona digest.)

Heya startupers! How are things going guys? I had a rather moved week. As I told you guys, I was at e-nnovation conference where I got to assist many startup-related events, including Startup Weekend Poznan and the Startup competition at e-nnovation. The SW winners was a rather cool startup named Kidd.ly, that helps parents set goals to their children, while the e-nnovation winner was supermama.me, a team from Startupbootcamp, but with a rather odd configuration, two women coming out of Egypt — something which is pretty amazing and I’m hoping to see again. Just for the record, there was also a cool Spanish team participating in the final round, libertexto.org. It was a pretty international crew.

I was also part of a very interesting panel on investment across Europe where we talked about how important it is to, not only create local tech hubs where people can meet, but interconnect them with others across the world. Would love to know your take on the local tech hub thing if you care to share. :)

And now, let’s kick it with our weekly events, this week is all about e-commerce in Madrid, so be ready to rumble if you like that space (Btw, 40 digests for Madrid, weheeee. We’re getting old. :P).

Greatings from Poland!I’m off for the e-nnovationconference in Poznan with a bunch of other entrepreneurs. If u haven’t been to Poland, I highly recommend it. One of the main themes we’ve seen here today is the lack of English usage of many startups when pitching. We saw 18 startups, out of them, only 4 did a presentation in English (including the winner, Kiddly). I say this because in Madrid, few events are done in English and while some people will object, I think it’s a wise idea so you can make your event more accessible (although in Spain you’ll probably get less people). Also, just wanted to remember Steve. I think that, even though most of us knew he was very sick, it’s a shock knowing he’s gone. Just as a tribute, I would love to share a video most of you have seen. If not, check it out as it’s something every entrepreneur, heck, every human being, should watch.

Morning, startupers! Hope you guys had a great weekend. I sure did! Plenty of events this week, so let’s get started! Hey, just in case, a good friend lent me the 37 Signals book, Rework, which I’m planning on reading very soon. He told me it’s brilliant and I do trust him very much (He was the first to point me to Maverik, which is a bible for me), so check it out too! :) Also, as a heads up, this next weekend the guys at Agile Spain are bringing Barcamp Spainto Seville. While it’s not Madrid, if you’re around Seville, it’s definitely worth swinging by. Now back to Madrid, let’s kick it guys!

Hi ho! How is everyone today? Hope you guys had a great weekend! I had one hell of a crazy week myself (in the stressful sense of it :P). I have to say, one of the highlights of the week was TEDxMadrid though. I was very impressed with the show they displayed. Everything went down perfect. Great talks and a great environment. For those that couldn’t attend, I’ll leave you with one of the videos that was shown during the TEDx here. It’s a mind blowing video and I’m sure will cheer your week. :)Investor Day from Startup Bootcamp Madrid was a great event with nine startups rocking on stage (Disclosure: I was one of the mentors to introduce one of the teams on stage so I might be biased :P). But I just wanted to say, hey, it’s Spain and we’re kicking it with International Investor days. Much to learn and much to do yet, but the startup scene seems busier than ever. Keep pushing guys!Off to our weekly events. This week is crazy with them.

Good morning, startupers! So, I’m back from my short vacation, full of energy and ready to rumble! :D First off, an announcement that if you’re in Barcelona, we just launched a Barcelona Digest! Check it out! By the way, The Lean Startup book from Eric Riesis already out! It’s a must read if you’re into startups, so that’s my recommendation for this week. I haven’t said this in some time but guys, we’re kicking ass, the Madrid Digest is growing like mad. We have more people than many other cities, so my BIG thanks to all of you that follow it. As usual, feel free to email me if you want your event in the digest (and it meet the standards: it’s for startups and it’s in Madrid :P). Finally, I got amazing emails for the “Startups 101 course for non-tech cofounders.” I’ll start planning it and will look for a place to hold it sometime in October, so stay tuned. :D Thanks all for your feedback! Now, let’s kick it! Yeaaaah!

Madrid StartupDigest – September 12, 2011

13/09/2011

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Hi everyone!
How has your week been? I can’t complain, writing this from Minorca — yeah I know, hehe. So this week I’ve been thinking about a project I wanted to do some time ago but that got lost at some point. I want to do a “Startups 101 for Non-Tech Co-Founders” course. The idea is to teach a workshop for non-tech co-founders where we show how to build a web app. The idea isn’t to train them as developers, but to show what a web server is, how to set it up, what is HTML, js, what a database is, how to use it and how to code some basic php to glue it all together into a functional web app (hello worlds are lame). The workshop would be done in Madrid so if you are around and might be interested, please drop me a line and give me your input :) Now, off we go to the startup week we have ahead!
