Over the past month we have tried out two tests: Startup Headlines and Help a Startup Out. Both of these tests were geared towards helping the startup ecosystem from the inside out. We wanted to give you an outlet to ask the community for help with getting feedback, finding beta testers, and startup jobs.

We’ve been closely monitoring all of the data from these tests and we noticed a trend. The most common and most popular needs were job postings and headlines from individuals looking for startup jobs. Since we had both sides of the jobs marketplace coming together, it’s a natural fit for us to create a product focused just on jobs.

Today, we are launching “Work with Startups!” to dedicate more time and effort to startup jobs.

Employers: What’s in it for you?

There are many alternatives out in the marketplace for startup jobs, including Craiglist, Simply Hired, Monster, and Startuply. Why should you post your job with us?

  • We will broadcast your job post in right column of the [Startup Digest], delivered to over 30,000 hackers, founders, and investors every week. (Check out an example here)
  • We’ll promote your job post and twitter profile to our 2k twitter followers
  • We will list your job posting on the new “Work with Startups” section on our website for 30 days, reaching 10k readers per month
  • Would your rather promote your job to a general audience or to the people with a demonstrated interest in the startup community in your local area?

Other places charge up to $500 per job post. We’ve been advised to charge a similar amount for this package, but we’ve decided to charge half of that–$200 for employers –because we want to help startups save money and, to be honest, $200 is all we need to cover our living expenses.

Job seekers: How to get a job at a startup

  1. Email the employers directly if they allow it. But first read their About page and CrunchBase profile’s to see if you’re a good fit. Don’t contact them if you don’t fit their interests — you’re not the exception that proves the rule.
  2. Get a reference from someone already working for the company, an investor of the startup, or customer of the startup. Don’t spam them though; you should already know them on a personal basis.
  3. Use Facebook/LinkedIn and ask mutual friends for an intro. You should either know the mutual friend well or the mutual friend should be open to cold calls.
  4. Do your due diligence.
  5. Send us a post of what you are looking for with your Linkedin profile / Resume and we will send your post out to the startup community by giving you all of the above, but for 1/4 the price: $50.

We recommend doing all of these at the same time. The idea isn’t to bug the employers, but to get noticed and have them take an interview with you.
